Teddington Sub-Aqua Club
Equipment
[ Home ]
Our Club owns 10 sets of scuba equipment. Before your Ocean Diver course begins, you will get together with our Equipment
Officer who will issue you with appropriate kit. You keep this for the duration of your course, and you are responsible
for it. We ask you for a cheque for £300 as a deposit, the cheque will be returned to you (uncashed) when you return our
equipment.
The kit will include:
- Weightbelt and weights
- Compressed air cylinder
- Regulator and gauges
- Buoyancy compensator jacket
- Mask and snorkel
- Fins
The cylinder will be supplied full and must be full when you return it. Air fills are readily available from local shops,
just take the cylinder in and ask for an air fill. It takes about 5 minutes (unless there's a queue) and costs £3.
If you normally wear glasses or contact lenses, you will want to consider buying your own mask, fitted to your prescription.
Any dive shop will be able to advise you. While you can wear contact lenses with a mask, there is a risk of losing them.
After your pool training is completed, you will be taken to open water to finish your course. You will need a wetsuit, hood,
boots and gloves. You may be able to borrow some of these from other Club members, but most likely you will need to hire them
from a local shop.
Be careful in dive shops. They are full of shiny stuff which you will be tempted to buy. Until you have passed your course
and done a few Branch dives, you may not know exactly what sort of diving you really want to do, which will affect your
choice of kit. The Club is a great resource of knowledge and advice, although you will find as many
opinions as there are divers. There are also advantages in joining up with other members to
buy in bulk. Alternatively, you can save money at the Dive Shows. These are held in March in
London and in October in Birmingham, you'll see them advertised in 'Dive Magazine'. There
are also second-hand bargains to be had, but you may want to consider that your life could
easily depend on that second-hand bargain.
